Marine Mammal Rehabilitation & Research Lab

This small group experience allows older teens to explore different aspects of marine mammal science. Teens gain daily hands on experience in animal husbandry while they work side by side with our rescue and rehabilitation team. Participants shadow our veterinarian on patient rounds and hear about current and past case studies. PMMC scientists teach the group about the physiology, population ecology, behavior and conservation of marine mammals. Teens participate in activities that are a part of

Lab Details

  • Ages 15-17

  • Cost per person $500

  • One week class 8 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday

  • Maximum # of participants per week: 8


 

Class Schedule (Subject To Change)

Day 1:

  • Orientation to Pacific Marine Mammal Center

  • Facility tour

  • Introduction to research at PMMC

  • Scientist talk on marine mammal conservation work in the field

Day 2:

  • Food inspection & preparation training for patient meals

  • Animal rehabilitation shadowing

  • Marine mammal rescue training

  • Discussion on assessing populations

  • Class marine mammal conservation project work

     

Day 3:

  • Marine mammal physiology seminar

  • Veterinary patient rounds

  • Marine mammal medicine seminar

  • Research observations on current patients

  • Scientist talk on marine mammal conservation work in the field

  • Class marine mammal conservation project work

     

Day 4:

  • Animal care area cleaning and food preparation

  • Scientist talk on marine mammal conservation work in the field

  • Field and lab research techniques workshop

  • Class marine mammal conservation project work

 

Day 5:

  • Marine mammal field observations: survey of past patients in the wild via zodiac boat

  • Class presentation of marine mammal conservation project
