Winter Soulstice - Pretend City Children's Museum

Every year, the Winter Solstice marks the day with the shortest sunlight, and the first astronomical day of winter. Here at Pretend City, it also provides an exciting opportunity to explore science with your family!

Art (all day):
- Explore brown pipe cleaners, paper leaves, and holly berries to put together a wreath for the whole family! Or, put together a smaller one and wear it as a beautiful crown during our grand exit parade!
- Using toilet paper rolls, paper, and glue, put together a candle to help light your way on this darkest day of the year!
- Have a splash in orange water and play with slices of citrus and seasoning!
Purpose of the Play: These activities will allow children to develop their fine motor skills, practice wrapping and developing finger strength, learn about cause and effect, and explore new sensations and traditions.
Santa Meet and Greet (9 AM – 11 AM):
- Pretend City citizens will have the opportunity to meet Santa and take a photo with him!
Story Time (11 AM & 2:30 PM):
- The beloved picture book Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner reveals the secret world of animals busily making their winter homes under the snow.
Math & Science (directly following story time):
- Ice Exploration! We will use ice and salt and encourage children to touch, feel and explore what reactions happen when ice and salt meet.
Purpose of the Play: STEAM, cause/effect, tactile experiences, texture exploration, understanding seasons and season changes.
